Print Vs. The Internet

I wonder how many years till the newspaper is completely on the internet. Many people who are devoted to print because it part of their everyday lives. In the book, “-30- The Collapse of the Great American Newspaper”, put together by Charles M. Madigan, is different stories about the newspaper industry were combined. I know we read it for class but I found it very interesting because I didn’t realize how much trouble the newspaper companies are in at the moment, especially with the present state of the economy. Most well-known newspapers are using internet sites to publish stories. Now that internet and computers is a part of everyday life the newspaper companies have to adjust to this factor and use their advantage. I had no idea so many companies had gone out of business because of the rapidly growing internet news industry. Some people believe that it started in print and that it should stay in print.

Newspapers discuss celebrities and, gossip, scandal, and sex more than ever before. Newspapers and news stations are now discussing content that appeals to a young crowd. This is because this type of content is very alluring to young readers. The chapter Money! Money! Money! in the book discusses how the newspaper industry is evolving. The problem is some older people don’t understand or like this type of content. If the print industry disappears altogether it might cause a problem because some of older people don’t understand how to work technology and it would become a struggle for them to access the news online. A lot of people prefer something tangible to have in their hands. My generation prefers to read or watch the news on their iPhones and iTouch iPods or other electronics that is capable of getting the news.

This Semester...


Over the course of this semester at Manhattanville I have been enriched in many different ways. I went to human rights awareness day and listened to the lecture about the holocaust in relations to human rights. My professor, Professor Yahalom was a speaker during Human Rights Awareness Day. There is even a campaign for human rights. After the lecture she gave us two questions in response to what we learned about human rights awareness that day. Professor Yahalom discussed how human rights are related to the Holocaust even though some people might question the relation. This semester I watched a film at I watched at Manhattanville called, “Judgment at Nuremburg.” “Judgment at Nuremburg” is a movie adaptation of the trials that took place at Nuremburg.

“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. ” —Article 1 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This definition demonstrates the meaning of human rights and what they represent. When we are born we are awarded these rights simply for being human. The violation of human rights is against the law. If I was having a conversation with someone who didn’t agree with the fact that the Holocaust has a connection to human rights I would recite the definition of human rights. I would ask them how they can question the existence of a connection. The Holocaust is the biggest event that took place that represents the violation of human rights. It is important to always realize that how important history is and that we can always learn from it.

Advertising Demographic Importance!!!


The text lists some major demographic characteristics that advertisers want to know. Can you think of other demographic variables that would be important to advertisers? What would make these important in selling a product?

The major demographic characteristics that Stovall points of in his book “Writing for the Media” are age, gender, income, education, and marital status. Each is important to advertisers because, depending on the intended audience of the product, the ad copy may be very different. For example, you wouldn’t put an ad for Depends in a magazine for adolescents. Ads have to be attractive to the age group they intending to reach. Especially when dealing with young children. Young children are just starting to read so if you add too much copy to the ad they will be turned off. Most of the time children respond to lots of bright colors and pictures. Gender is also very important because if you’re advertising a product for women you have to make sure that the ad copy or dialogue in a TV ad is designed just for women. Women like to feel special also ads help women feel more comfortable even if the ad is about something uncomfortable. People need to feel like their problems are being solved. The third demographic that Stovall brought up was income. Income plays a big part in advertising because you don’t want to develop a product that no one can afford. Advertisers don’t want to waste money advertising for a product that certain areas can’t afford. They also don’t want people to be turned off by their product because they know they can’t afford it. Advertising in areas where someone might not be able to afford the product is bad for business because it reminds those people of their economic status. So advertisers advertise in areas were their product will be the most positively responded. Some demographics I thought of were race, culture, religion, location, occupation, hobbies, personality, and if you are a parent.

Vampire Craze!!!


Vampires have taken a huge bite in to the media. Vampires are everywhere these days from books to movies. I feel like many movies being created today have been incorporating vampires. I think that this is a marketing tool because most books and movies with vampires seem to be selling very well. In the past two years at least four movies and even more books have consisted of vampires. The theme of vampires originated with the 1897 novel Dracula written by Bram Stoker. In 1994, “An Interview with a Vampire” starring 90s heartthrobs Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise came out. Vampires are often played by very attractive people and the leading men are the ones that for some reason receive the most attention. In 2008, the movie “Twilight” came out starring Robert Patterson and Kirsten Stewart recreated the vampire craze. After the movie “Twilight” came out most people ran to the stores to purchase Stephanie Meyer’s novels: “Twilight”, “New Moon”, “Eclipse”, and “Breaking Dawn” I know I did. I personally think that the books are better than the movies. “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” film was a much better adaptation of the novel “New Moon” than the first movie “Twilight” was. I am very glad because the books are really good and the movies should do them justice. Vampires are often played by very attractive people and the leading men are the ones that for some reason receive the most attention. In 2008, HBO created a series about vampires called “Truebloodbased on The Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlaine Harris. Then, earlier this year the CW11 created a series about vampires called, “The Vampire Diaries” based on the novel series “The Vampires Diaries” by L.J. Smith. Vampires sell because they are often played by very attractive actors.

Public Relations Vs. Journalism!

Many People who work in journalism and elsewhere have a very negative opinion of the field of public relations. Why do you think they have such an opinion?

Public relations is the managing of communication of certain corporations or people who are often discussed or seen in the public. Many people who work in journalism realize that public relations are a field where people deal with the advertising of their clients whether they are celebrities or business. Public relations was designed for people who are famous or have a large corporation and need constant advice on how to uphold a good image in the public eye. A PR’s job is to make sure that the information that is exposed about their client is positive and if something happens that ruins their good image it is their job to make the situation go away or not as serious as it might seem. PR’s tell their clients what to say during interviews, at an event, or if their client did something wrong and needs to apologize to fans or another person. PR’s are the people who set up press conferences and tell their client what to do to regain popularity within their publics again. In a way PR’s are script writers because often their clients have written out scripts on how to face a certain event. The main difference between PR’s and journalists is that journalists mostly write from an objective point of view and PR’s write from a subjective point of view. PR’s are hired solely on the purpose to promote their client positively. Journalists are often skeptical because someone might be completely corrupt, but with the right press agent know would know. Journalists are the people who try to find the truth unlike press agents who can be paid to hide it. Public relations agents are good when you have an honest company or person who is trying to do well, but I understand why journalists might be skeptical at times.
